NBC 7 SAN DIEGO AND NBCUNIVERSAL FOUNDATION AWARD $100,000 TO THREE NONPROFITS IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY
SAN DIEGO,CA – (November 21, 2016) – NBC 7 San Diego/KNSD, in partnership with the NBCUniversal Foundation, today announced that three San Diego nonprofit organizations will receive a total of $100,000 as part of the 21st Century Solutions grant challenge.
In the San Diego market, the following organizations are the recipients of a 21st Century Solutions grant:
Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank – $50,000
The Warehouse Energy Conservation Plan is a no food wasted/energy efficient model that will help the Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank (JCSDFB) with energy cost savings so that they can continue to provide for low-income clientele. More space is needed to help house and provide massive quantities of highly nutritious food for over 400,000 very low-income San Diego residents. The Warehouse Energy Conservation Plan aims to install LED lighting, energy-efficient refrigeration controls, 1,400 solar panels on the roof, and a state-of-the-art recycling and composting center at the Food Bank. By doing so, the JCSDFB will save hundreds of thousands of dollars and be able to spend those resources on millions of meals for their low-income clientele.
The New Children’s Museum – $25,000
The New Children’s Museum Innovators Lab will be a permanent open workshop space that provides tools, technology, manufacturing equipment and educational opportunities to the public. Makerspaces allow community members to design, prototype and manufacture items using tools and equipment that would otherwise be inaccessible or unaffordable such as 3-D printers, laser cutters, digital fabrication machines, industrial sewing machines, and computer-aided design (CAD) software. They will primarily market this STEAM education makerspace to school groups (grades 3 – 8).
NAMI San Diego – $25,000
ALFRED is a mobile app that will give residents of San Diego county suffering from mental illness access to health, wellness, and the ability to connect with family and friends. Currently, NAMI San Diego serves 16,377 participants through our existing program. With the addition of ALFRED, NAMI San Diego anticipates the program growth to serve a total of 370,000 participants. Each of the children, youth, families, parents and seniors who enter this program will equally benefit from the mobile app. This app will be replicable in other regions, other than San Diego county and used universally.

For the fifth consecutive year, the 21st Century Solutions grant challenge is awarding a total of $1.2 million to 30 nonprofits in 10 markets across the country served by the NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations, including in San Diego. Each of the NBCUniversal-owned stations promoted the initiative locally and created a community panel to review and select the final grant recipients.
