SAN DIEGO -- A local company has pioneered a new type of text messaging where cell phone users can start a string of messages with people they have never met.
The company, San Diego-based SMS.AC, gives people around the world the ability to text message one another via their cell phones. The service is different from traditional text messaging, says the company's founder, Greg Wilfahrt (pictured, left).
"Unlike an e-mail where you may or may not be at your PC, our product allows you to reach out and touch these people any time, at any place, because you're always connected to your mobile device," Wilfahrt said.SMS.AC allows for eight free messages a day and then charges for the service. Fees can range from $.03 to $.50, NBC 7/39 reported. Users also agree to get one text ad each day.
The company's Web site looks similar to a dating service, NBC 7/39 reported. Dating is, in fact, why many users log on."It kept our relationship alive and it kept me in contact with her," said Eric Malone of his relationship with his girlfriend while she was out of the country. "But I also use it to taunt my buddy at work."The Web site also shows pictures of single people from Paris to Pakistan. The service allows users to text message other users from cell phones or from the company Web site.
