World's Lowest Golf Course

SEPTEMBER'S NEARLY HERE: And that means slowly, slowly, cooler temperatures will arrive. Now, we're not implying that bright scarlet fall leaves will be dropping in Death Valley starting on Sept. 1. Or starting ever. But that does mean you can consider outdoor pursuits nearer the middle of the day, if you're not an extreme heat buff. Say, golf.

THE WORLD'S LOWEST GOLF COURSE: That's the special record-book-y designation at the Furnace Creek Golf Course. How many feet above sea level is the built-in-1931 course, you might inquire? The question is how many feet *below* sea level. That would be 214. Should the birdies on this course actually be called roadrunneries? Maybe that's stretching it.

LODGING: Furnace Creek Ranch stays open all year long; Furnace Creek Inn will open for its season on Friday, Oct. 8.
