Get Ready for Grunions

When you hear the words "grunion run" it means essentially one thing: sealife shimmying onto land.

While on the beach, female grunion bury themselves in the sand to lay eggs, while males wrap themselves protectively around the females to fertilize their eggs.

Both catch a wave to return to sea.

The grunion runs are ruled by the phases of the moon, so of course there are only a few during a season.

Just this week, the folks at Birch Aquarium at Scripps released the dates for the 2011 season so get your pens and pencils ready kids.
