Phantom Evening: Silver City Ghost Town

The atmospheric Kern County attraction seeks spirits on a springtime night.

SPIRITED SEARCHES... aren't confined to October, nor are they bound to a single season (with that season, of course, being autumn). We might associate an after-dark ghost hunt with twirling leaves on the ground and a brisk chill in the air, but such searches go on throughout the year, during every month, depending upon the destination. One of the best-known alfresco attractions in California is Silver City Ghost Town, in Kern County, and while you might step into an old-timey 1800s building, now and then, you'll be under the starry sky for much of your visit. It's a place that regularly holds ghost hunts, often with special visitors — think authors and TV crews — and, while it can get busy in the fall, it does welcome visitors for post-sundown searches in other seasons, too. One of those seasons is springtime, and the 2017 opening date is just ahead on...

SATURDAY, APRIL 29: Think of this opener as "Halfoween," which regularly falls on May 1 (being the halfway day to Halloween night). Or simply think of it as a spooky nighttime adventure complete with host J Paul Corlew and Tim Doyle of "UFO Seekers," the night's special guest. The full name of the supernatural-neato to-do? History/Mystery Lantern Light Night Tours & Live Paranormal Investigations. A ticket is twenty bucks and helps support the charmer of a vintage-everything museum, which is also open during the day, too, for non-ghosty looking around. If you brim with anticipation for October, and can't wait another four or five months for a fountain of phantom tours to burble all around Southern California, consider a trip to Silver City for this one-of-a-kind evening of looking and, quite possibly, maybe maybe, seeing? Certainly, the town is flush with phantom-like structures and stories, making for a remember-it outing.
