Early Preview: What's Ahead for Mammoth

The re-opening of June Mountain is just one highlight.

CHILLY CHANGES: A snowy peak can seem eternal and unchanging and epic, at first glance. One imagines that it looks very much like it did a thousand years ago and it looks very much like it will a millennium from now. But if a ski resort operates on the mountain, things do evolve. Oh, not the prettiness of the peak -- that's a constant -- but what happens during a particular season. August has only begun and yet Mammoth Mountain, one of the Sierra's ski hot- (or cold-?) spots, has made a few announcements about the 2013-2014 season and what is to come. A few highlights...

JUNE MOUNTAIN RE-OPENS: It was a spring announcement ski fans had to be happy about: June Mountain, which had been shuttered for a year to skiers as management decided on next steps, would re-open in December of 2013. Make that mid-December, and if you're a Mammoth Mountain MVP? That pass'll get you skiing on June, you betcha.

OFFICIAL TRAINING GROUND: Athletes training for the 2014 Sochi Olympics will use Mammoth Mountain as "an official training ground" for U.S. Free skiing and U.S. Snowboarding. In addition, the U.S. Olympic Snowboarding Team for half-pipe will be announced at Mammoth during the Sprint Snowboarding Grand Prix on Jan. 18-19, 2014.

EXTRAS, EXTRAS: Mammoth Mountain Inn is getting some major renos (to the tune of $700,000) and Campo is getting some menu updates. Also? Daily flights from San Francisco, LA, San Diego, and OC will continue, meaning if you have to hit the cold stuff faster, you can get there faster to do so. It may still be summer, but we feel winter's icy niceness on the wind.
