A Carmel Getaway Gives Back on Every Room

Stonepine Estate Resort commits 20-percent of revenues to charity.

A PHILANTHROPIC TWIST: "Crocker" is a name long associated with the Bay Area, but the Crocker family set down roots to the south, too. Stonepine Estate in Carmel Valley is a Crocker abode, although "abode" may be too humble a word: The 1920s home definitely can be called a mansion and nothing less. But it is no longer a private home but a getaway that's very much in the luxury class (as the word "estate" in the name would imply). There's a fresh twist in Stonepine's nearly century-old story, however: Gordon and Noel Hentschel, the owners behind the posh property, are putting an interesting choice in the guest's corner. And that is this: Choose how 20% of your lodging fee will be donated.

NINE CHARITIES: The Hentschels have selected a nonet of organizations, collectives which will now receive one-fifth of Stonepine's lodging and site fees. The SPCA of Monterey County, Migrant Clinicians Network, and Mustang Heritage Foundation are three of the nine.

THE PACKAGES: There's a trio of new packages on offer. Estate Experience, Carmel Valley Wine Discovery, and Equestrian Immersion. Prices kick off at $1,150 for two nights for a two people; luxe breakfast and a fancy dinner and several elegant extras are in the fine print.

THE ESTATE: The property is quintessential romantic 1920s California, or the dream of California that so many West-lookers held in that era. And the land? Stonepine calls nearly 400 acres of Carmel Valley home, so think of those iconic, soft, tree-dotted, oh-so-Carmel-y vistas.

OF NOTE: Every organization chosen by Stonepine is 501(c)(3) qualified, meaning it is tax deductible.
