Winter Deals in Big Bear

$69 a night? That's the starting point for lift and lodging packages.

COMMON WISDOM: There are certain truisms in travel, a main one being that when it is the so-called season for an area prices rise. When the weather turns or the air grows chilly (or too warm), that's when the deals begin. With that in mind, we like to give the spotlight to those places that walk the discount road during their prime time, that peak moment when fees could conceivably be at their zenith. Big Bear Lake is primed to do that right now. Yep, for many, the lake is a summertime playground, but we'll wager that many other people view as the place to hop on a pair of skis come December. So that lodging and lift packages are now starting at $69, here at the beginning of December, is definitely worth a shout.

MORE ON THE DEALS: Midweek lift tickets start at $59, but the savings start to kick in when lodging is bundled with lift tickets, says a Big Bear Lake Resort Association rep. If you've never snowboarded or skied up the mountain, there are twenty-six lifts and four high-speed chairs at Bear Mountain and Snow Summit, making it a resort of hefty size. Oh, and lookie here; more snow may be due in a few days, already adding to the snowable stuff covering the hills.

HOLIDAY ON THE HILL: Thinking about taking a Christmas or New Year's getaway? A number of Big Bear places will be open on or near Christmas Day including the Bowling Barn, Big Bear Snow Play, and Alpine Slide.
