San Diego Crew Classic

OARS UP: All athletic competitions have their supporters, which is good and right and helpful for the athletes out on the field or water or rink. But few contests seem to have the fervent devotion of those who follow crew. Well, let's let the movies be our guide on this one (as they so often are, in many cases). Have you ever seen crew in a film -- think "Oxford Blues" to "The Social Network" -- and not seen die-hard backers all bundled up and jumping up and down along the shore? The support of this storied form is serious stuff indeed. And though they likely won't be too bundled up, many fans'll be out on Mission Bay for the San Diego Crew Classic, which marks year 38 in 2011.

APRIL 2 AND 3: What's billed as "America's Premier Sporting Regatta" will host some 90 races over a Saturday and Sunday, which means there will be action pretty much all day long over both days. There will also be a beer garden for people rooting from the shore, and a jumbotron (so helpful once those sleek boats glide out of view, as they tend to quickly do). So, who is competing? The site says "collegiate, junior, and masters athletes" will be out with the oars. A big weekend, indeed, for those committed to crew racing, and the rooting of.
