Queen Mary's Memorial Day Salute

The Queen Mary offers free admission to military veterans.

DECO AND DECORATED: There are plenty of eye-catching photos and baubles and rooms and views on the Queen Mary. Talk to any person who has been to the Long Beach-based ocean liner and they're likely to cite the woodsy curves of the Art Deco bar or the vintage on-display costumes or that strollable promenade that feels probably very much like it did back in 1938. But the image that stays with many was snapped during World War II, when the posh boat became for a brief and dramatic time the Grey Ghost. It went from delivering swells and travelers from port to port and became part of the U.S. war effort. Out went the luxury luggage and on walked the soldiers. The image, long on view on the Queen Mary, is of those soldiers out at sea. Which reminds us that, come Memorial Day, we need to think about the landmark and the role she played long ago.

AND THE QUEEN MARY... remembers, too. With that in mind, all military veterans will receive free admission -- that's a First Class Passport -- to the ship between Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day. That's Saturday, May 19 through Monday, May 28. A uniform must be worn or military ID shown, and friends and family will receive a four-dollar discount on their ticket. The passport offers some interesting to-dos, like a look inside the submarine that's semi-submerged next to the Queen. Check out the details before making for LBC.
