Costa Mesa Scots Fest

Whisky tasting, dancing, and drumming sound in the OC.

SCOTLAND SOIREE: Southern California is home to many a fine and noble Highland Games and each have their pluses. And while we await the San Diego party, which is still just about a month out, we can break in that recently purchased kilt in Costa Mesa over the Memorial Day Weekend. That's because it is Orange County's turn at the drums and caber tossing. The Scots Fest will be tossing those cabers -- and tasting the whisky and walking the oh so famous, oh so challenging Farmers Walk -- on Saturday, May 26 and Sunday, May 27.

SCHEDULE HIGHLIGHTS: The athletics always drawn in-awe spectators; in addition to the Farmers Walk -- how far can you saunter while holding some very heavy weights? -- there will be Putting the Stone, Hammer Throws, Throwing the Weight, and, yep, the Caber Toss. If a more chill activity is more your cup of tea -- or shot of something stronger -- there are whisky classes on both Saturday and Sunday. Times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. each day. We're not sure we've ever sipped a spirit at midday on a sunny OC holiday weekend, but there's a first time for everything.

ALSO GOING ON... The West Coast Rockabilly Showdown is also happening in Costa Mesa; opening day is, in fact, Saturday, May 26. Even if you can't catch all five weekends of vintage-flavored music, a stop-by the Orange County Marketplace'll fill you with a few tunes. Surely there are people out there who love a good caber toss and some pompadour-style rock-outs. We know we definitely are on that list.
