If you're a fan of music, this is a great weekend to be in San Diego. There are some great local and touring bands playing around town, and if you're feeling really adventurous, you can hit a couple shows in the same night, thanks to early and late shows at places like the Casbah, Anthology and the Belly Up.
Friday gets started with a 6 p.m. show featuring AA Bondy, Willy Mason and locals the Paddle Boat. One of the Casbah's sound engineers, Jake McLaughlin, is the tour manager for AA Bondy, so he's been on the road with them, reporting that the shows have been incredible. Judging by the last time AA Bondy was in town, this show will definitely be talked about. Imaad Wasif is a Canadian singer/songwriter and would be great to catch at Bar Pink after the Casbah.
If the indie scene isn't for you, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Mavis Staples is performing at Anthology, you can hear some metal up at the Ramona Mainstage, some hip-hop over at 710 Beach Club or some great singer/songwriters at Lestat's.
Saturday night is out of control. With a rare reunion, Creedle will be rocking the Casbah, Adam Franklin of Swervedriver fame is playing at Soda Bar for only 5 bucks, and the former San Diegan Castanets will be playing an all ages show at Che Cafe.
Lastly, don't get too carried away watching the big game on Sunday, because there are some great shows to catch when the sun sets. The all-ages set can catch the last show ever for rockers My American Heart at the Epicentre in Mira Mesa, legend Kris Kristofferson is performing at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido, or you can see the prohibition-inspired tunes of locals The Silent Comedy at Bar Pink. After all, you have Monday off, right?
