Locking Horns With the Antlers

New York-based indie rockers the Antlers and Phantogram will play the Casbah on April 28.

The Antlers are known for their acclaimed 2009 record, Hospice, which chronicles the story of a man losing his girlfriend to cancer. Not exactly uplifting stuff, but Hospice did earn a spot on many blogs' Best of 2009 lists.

A dark topic like cancer might seem better suited to the indie-folk genre, where raw emotion runs rampant, but the Antlers are a little more energetic than that. Their songs often start out quietly, but it isn't long before drummer Michael Learner starts breaking his sticks. And they also have a way of creating a wall of sound -- through the use of dozens of effects pedals -- that makes for a fascinating show. For a taste of their sound, check out "Two."

After you finish banging your head to the Antlers' sonic explosions, Saratoga Springs-based Phantogram will be on hand to make you shake your tail. Their danceable electronica is sure to make even the most stoic indie fan bust move. According to OwlandBear.com writer J. Walkos, listening to Phantogram makes him feel like he should be "walking in slow motion, dark shades on, gliding into a room." Need I say more?
