Here Comes the Summer

Summer is here, but isn't it always summer in San Diego? We are a lucky bunch on this southern portion of the great US of A! The nightlife just keeps getting better and better -- people are believing in San Diego and I like it! Next time you plan on going out, take some friends and introduce them to something they have never done before in this town. There's so much to do in June and you need to get out and do it: the talent, the venues, it's all amazing here! Now if I were you, or better yet if you were me, you might go check out some of these SD happenings:

First off on Friday June 1 a stellar two-band bill goes down at the Casbah with the Duke Spirit and Hacienda. The Duke Spirit just released a new single, "Glorious," and Hacienda is Dan Auerbach's (the Black Keys) solo backing band.

June 2, rock & roll fire-eaters the Supersuckers roll into town to set fire to the Casbah with their brand of kick--- rock & roll!

Sunday June 3, after FM94/9's sold-out SPF 949 at the Oceanside Amphitheater, I'm heading to see Scottish band Mogwai at the Belly Up Tavern. Should be loud, then quiet, then loud again!

Tuesday June 5 is tough with the Pains of Being Pure at Heart playing a free Filter Magazine event at the 207 Club inside the Hard Rock Hotel and A Place to Bury Strangers at the Casbah. What to do?

Friday June 8, Unknown Hinson holds it down at the Casbah, plus Squidbillies on the screen! Squidbillies is the Adult Swim show that features Unknown Hinson as the lead character's voice.

Monday June 11, hometown heros Pinback lay it down for Casbah's Anti-Monday League. Look for a new Pinback record in the Fall.

Wednesday June 13, brings the Temper Trap and SD's own Crocodiles to the House of Blues downtown. Crocodiles have a brand new record and a new label. The record, Endless Flowers, is out out now on French Kiss.

June 14, New Edition plays the San Diego Civic Theater, but I'm going to see Van Halen at Viejas Arena.

Friday June 15, legendary punk rockers the Dickies play the Griffin. Their version of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" is still one of my favorites.

June 16, Japandroids play the Casbah in support of their new record, Celebration Rock.

Sunday June 17, the Jesus and Mary Chain play the House of Blues downtown. Formed in 1983 in Glasgow, these two brothers are often imitated, but never surpassed.

Wednesday June 20 at the San Diego County Fair, you can check out Eric Burdon of the Animals and hear "House Of The Rising Sun" by the man himself!

Friday June 22, Quintron & Miss Pussycat bring their brand of "Swamp Tech" to the Casbah. Quintron the eccentric artist and inventor will blow your mind with the "Drum Buddy" or the "Disco Light Machine" -- both musical inventions of his.

Wednesday June 27, 2:54 from the UK plays the Casbah and the Warped Tour happens in Chula Vista, I'm going to both. Don't know much about the bands on Warped Tour, but I can tell you the girls in 2:54 will rock you with a wall of sound!

Friday June 29, Friends at the Casbah or the Soft Pack at the Belly Up Tavern. Once locally know as the Muslims, they are now known internationally as the Soft Pack. Welcome them home!

I only highlighted some of my favorites, but don't trust me as your taste-maker, search it out for yourself. I am here for you, though, and I love this town! I want sold-out shows for locals and touring bands, so get out and see some shows! Thank you for your support!

Tim Pyles hosts The Local 94/9, FTP show and the Coup d'Eat on FM94/9 on Sundays from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. He also books local acts at the Casbah and hosts the weekly Anti-Monday League. Check out his website and follow him on Twitter @thelocalpyle. You can reach him directly here pyleste@yahoo.com
