The Wright Stuff at Anthology

Lizz Wright just has one of those voices. Like the first time you hear Nina Simone or Tracy Chapman, you know immediately that you're hearing something unique and special.

Growing up in the church,  Wright honed her voice on hymns and spirituals, but her show at Anthology on Jan. 27showcased the wide variety of influences upon which she draws. She sang songs from all four of her studio albums, throwing a few new arrangements on a couple of favorites, as well as including a few nicely chosen covers.

The expertly nuanced set balanced her excellent backing band with Wright's signature croon, which deftly moved from soulful caresses to powerful bursts and back again.
