The story about singer/songwriter Rodriguez is pretty amazing, and audiences far and wide have responded to the story by flocking to see the recent documentary, Searching for Sugar Man.
In a nutshell, Rodriguez was a Detroit musician who put out a couple records in the late '60s and early '70s. The albums went largely unnoticed in the United States, but not in South Africa, which was largely isolated from the world under Apartheid. Somebody travelling brought the record to South Africa and the music became the soundtrack for the anti-Apartheid movement. Little was known about the man who became "bigger than Elvis" until some journalists hunted far and wide in the late '90s to bring Rodriguez to the African nation.
Tonight's Casbah show is sold out and, if you aren't a lucky ticketholder, you should see the film and be ready for the announcement of Rodriguez's return in early spring.
