Sounds Like San Diego: Oct. 2

If you're a San Diego native like me and grew up listening to local music as I did, you probably remember a beautiful period in the early '90s when we were "the next Seattle" (as perfectly captured in the documentary, It's Gonna Blow) and the music scene was electric. Friday's 91x Homecoming show at the Oceanside Pier makes me giddy for the nostalgia of Rocket From the Crypt, Finch and Lucy's Fur Coat, but it's also a reminder of how our scene is always growing and evolving, with bands like Pinback and Mrs Magician, both with more recent successes. Every act on the bill has a San Diego connection, and rumor has it that this could be the last show ever for more than a couple of these bands (though we hope that is not true), so take off early from work and get to Oceanside, where the gates open at 3 p.m. If you can't make the trek, Vacationer are at the Casbah, Ratatat are at the Observatory, and the Dear Hunter are at the Irenic.
