David Vandervelde got me fired. OK, maybe that isn't 100 percent accurate, but the last time he performed in San Diego (Oct. 8, 2008), he stayed with some of my friends, and after their show at the Casbah, we sat around in the back yard as he played songs on guitar all night long. When the sun came up, I had enough time to go home, shower, slam some coffee and get to work for our 9 a.m. daily conference call. When I was fired (for reasons not related to my all-nighter), my first thought was that I should've just skipped work altogether because when talented artists are sitting around playing music off the cuff, you should always stick around to experience the magic. David is performing tonight at the Soda Bar with two great bands, the Fling and the Wind, and I would highly suggest you check them out, though I know it's a tough call with a free Yacht show at the Hard Rock, Maria Taylor of Azure Ray performing at the Casbah and Metronomy playing at Voyeur. At least you know it will be a solid Tuesday no matter which show you choose.
