Jay Farrar leads Son Volt in chronicling the recession -- or, just making songs about the rusty parts of life in America -- which the band has always done.
Do you remember your first time? I do. Son Volt had just released Trace and I was anxiously looking forward to my very first show at the Belly Up. I remember how much I loved the room, the way the warm wood made Jay Farrar's voice so true to the warmth of the record. I remember my date and how incredibly awkward we were around each other and how we nervously drank too much to make it less awkward. But mostly, I remember how awesome Jay Farrar's voice carried in the room, and the way every word meant so much. Since that time so long ago, Jay has released many records, some solo, some with Son Volt, and it will all always take me back to that first date with the Belly Up, where Jay Farrar returns tonight.
