When I was in high school, I had this fascination with Brazilian culture, and I convinced my parents that we should take in a Brazilian exchange student. As it turned out, we got Flavio, a 15-year-old from Sao Paolo. His uncle ran the exchange program, so he was immature, spoiled and arrogant and had no business representing his country in an exchange program. My skater friends, however, loved Flavio, because they had an eternal debate about the best band in metal: Slayer or Sepultura. Flavio had some sort of connection -- maybe a cousin in the band -- and so we would drive around in the back of Noah's VW bus, blaring Sepultura and Slayer as they argued about the nuances of metal. I just laughed. For those cherished moments of youth and freedom, I thank both Slayer and Sepultura. Catch Sepultura tonight at the House of Blues.
