There are certain artists who seem to find a second life. While I was in college, it seemed everyone I knew suddenly loved Marty Robbins, even though the bulk of his career existed even before my parents were born. With Americana and country increasingly penetrating contemporary rock music, it is natural that this resurrection happens with other artists like Gram Parsons, whose brilliance and mythology is only amplified by his early death at age 26 as a result of a drug overdose. Lately I have heard several bands reference the Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo album, of which Parsons was a pivotal contributor. On Sunday night, several talented musicians will pay tribute to his music, including Jack Tempchin (best known for penning the Eagles' "Peaceful Easy Feeling") and Rick Rosas. Of course, there are other options If that show isn't your calling -- O'Brother take the stage at Soda Bar, Ty Segall hits the Casbah, and for you long time San Diegans, DJ Greyboy will be spinning at The Griffin.
