Two years ago, I found myself lurking around corners of La Costa Resort and Spa. It was Sunset Sessions, a music industry event that is part conference, part band showcase, and part schmoozefest. I was waiting for our SoundDiego action to begin as KPRI readied a room where performers would come to perform private acoustic sessions, which would be broadcast on radio and posted on the web. The main conference room was mostly empty, but kd lang was sound--checking with her band, so a few people milled about. I poked my head in the off-limits room and heard that unmistakable voice as she sang her most popular hit, "Constant Craving." It was nearly two decades since the song was heard just about everywhere, but that voice still made the hair on my arms stand up. This woman can belt it out. On Wednesday, you can catch kd at Humphreys. Certainly she'll sing the hit, but she has quite a repertoire under her belt, and in the open air by the bay, there is no doubt the hair will stand up straight as she croons. The bonus for this show is that Milk Carton Kids, who will break your heart and make you fall in love at the same time, will be opening the show. Grab their music for free from their website, then hear them sing songs like "Michigan" or "New York," and find yourself longing for places far away while you enjoy the beauty of San Diego.
