Sometimes I wish that venues and clubs would consult each other when they're booking bands so they can spread out the goodness. This Friday is one of those nights where a lot of places might actually be less busy because they're all vying for the same crowd. Rhett Miller of the Old 97's plays in San Diego fairly regularly, but this is the first time back at the Casbah in quite some time, and with his backing band, the Serial Lady Killers, he'll likely delve into the hits as well as playing stuff from his new album, The Dreamer. You can also catch him early at M-Theory if you have other nighttime plans, like the Heavy Guilt at the Propagandist. This is a free show and the Heavy Guilt will be playing a couple of lengthy sets throughout the night, so theoretically you could see them and another show like Rhett, the Styletones at Bar Pink or Vanaprasta at Soda Bar. Indigo Girls will be here, Anya Marina is back in town, Switchfoot plays the fair, and Western Scene -- featuring Tom of Dynamite Walls -- make their debut at Kitty Diamond. Don't worry, you can sleep in tomorrow.
