It is very easy to look at Friday's listings and see the absence of major touring acts and think that it must be a dead night in the city. But the reality is that, when the big guys are away, the hometown kids stay home and play. Anywhere you look, there are solid local shows and a few touring acts thrown in for good measure. Midnight Rivals perform at Whistle Stop while River City headline at Tin Can. Out-of-towners Venice perform at the intimacy of AMSD while hip-hop legend KRS One performs at Winston's. A few weeks ago I gushed about Ugly Boogie as the next big San Diego band and Friday they headline at the Casbah, while Tim Raldo has dropped his unprintable band for a show at the Tower Bar. It's actually a great night for music -- you just have to know where to look.
