Sounds Like San Diego: August 31

David Gray headlines SDSU's Open Air Theatre Sunday night

Ever since Bar Pink revealed that Drive Like Jehu would be reuniting for a one time only show at Balboa Park's Organ Pavillion (read our article on it here), San Diego music fans have been rejoicing. Sure, it's only a half hour set with Civic Organist Dr. Carol Williams, but the news spread far and wide, including blogs like Consequence of Sound and even noted in "Rolling Stone." This is a really big deal to anyone who cared about the local music scene in the early '90s. It's free, and you can be sure it will be a who's who of local musicians, radio personalities, bloggers, photographers, and videographers. It is also worth noting that the vast majority of San Diegans have no idea why this matters, and for those people there are plenty of other reasons to get out of the house and catch some live music today. The Casbah hosts a matinee show with some local acts today, and by night Grampa Drew hosts his Flim-Flam Revue, which is kind of like a talent show with especially talented local musicians. Awesome Fest wraps with its final day, Gipsy Kings return to Humphrey's, and Ziggy Marley performs at the track. My big pick for the night, however, is David Gray at the Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre. The singer/songwriter is incredibly talented, and I've lost track of exactly how many times I've seen him perfom (maybe 11?). He will make the hair on your arms stand straight up and the OAT is a perfect venue for his voice to carry under the night sky. And you can probably zip over after Jehu and still catch his full set. It will be totally worth it.
