When I was younger, my friends had favorite girl groups, mostly of the Top 40 variety, but when I got my hands on Concrete Blonde's Still In Hollywood, I had the album on constant rotation. The 1994 album was a collection of unreleased songs, covers and outtakes, and to this day, it still holds up. Johnette Napolitano has a voice like no other, and when the band performs at the Belly Up on Tuesday, their setlist will undoubtedly span more than 25 years of material. If you're not up for a night up north, the Very Best bring a blend of tribal beats, hip-hop, pop and, with vocalist Esau Mwamwaya, traditional sounds of Malawi. Never heard "traditional sounds of Malawi" before? Come to the Casbah and discover somethign new.
