Let me just get this out of the way: There are certain words in band names that I find really grating. Anything with Kings or Kids are usually at the top of that list. I can't really explain it, but the former sounds like way too much ego and the latter ... well, maybe I grew up when New Kids on the Block were huge and I wanted nothing to do with them. (And now that they're all in their 30s, "Kids" seems pretty ridiculous.) So it was with some serious hesitation that I even opened the e-mail about Milk Carton Kids, an L.A. duo steeped deep in Americana and folk roots, but I'm so glad I did. The band has its full album available for free download, and it didn't take long for me to be glad I hadn't dismissed it because of its name. The band is performing tonight at Anthology, and while there are some great shows all over town, this is one that is not to be missed.
