Fans of Canadian folk-punkers the Weakerthans haven't seen a new record from the band in five years, but frontman John K. Samson has been busy creating music, including a couple of EP's in 2009 and 2010. In January, some of those tracks were re-recorded and put together with new songs to become Provincial, the first release from John K. Samson & the Provincial Band. On the album, Samson wears his heart and his home on his sleeve, telling stories with themes of love and longing without resorting to cliché. Samson's delivery will sit well with fans of Death Cab for Cutie and the Decemberists, and his show at the Casbah on Thursday should be easy on the ears and soothing for the soul.
