There are some really awesome shows around town on Thursday, including one by my friends Saint Motel from LA, who will play at the Loft, and Ghoul at Soda Bar and Tyrone Wells at the House of Blues. However, I'm focusing on my broke friends, instead: the ones who call to ask for free tickets, the ones who say they can't go out because everything is too expensive, the ones who say there's nothing going on in this town. To all of you, I say, "Bah!" As in Casbah. Start your night at MaryJane's Underground at the Hard Rock Hotel, where Tim Pyles hosts live music with Sundrop Electric and St. Cloud Sleepers. There are hosted beverages for a stretch if you RSVP. From there, head to the Casbah for a free show by Smooth Harbor Yacht Club. I've mentioned them before, and now word is spreading that they're one of the most fun bands to see live, in part for their yacht-rock selections of songs, and in part because they dress the part, but mostly because these are actually serious musicians we know from other great local acts who are genuinely out to have a fun time. And on Thursday, you can see Smooth Harbor Yacht Club for free, with or without your Members Only jacket.
