Pepe Mogt, the man who puts the Fussible in Bostich + Fussible, has put life back into MC Lyte's 1991 single “When In Love.”
What's not to love about a hip-hop throwback where one of the greatest femcees gets a Latinsizer makeover by Tijuana's beloved Nortec pioneer? The remix is like a fresh, mouth-watering steak grilled a la Tijuana served in a warm homemade tortilla. When I first heard it, I did the happy dance – you know, the one when you eat something so yummy.
Moreover, the track reminded me why MC Lyte is 'Lyte as a Rock.' Great music always goes on repeat, inspires and makes you want to dig the crates -- well the YouTube crates, that is. And Mogt's remix of "When In Love" did just that.
Dita Quiñones: Where were you or what creative zone were you in when you remixed MC Lyte's "When In Love"?
Pepe Mogt: I was in a really down mood. I was composing a track for Latinsizer – my all electronic music project – and found in my vinyls an a capella of MC Lyte and I played along with this track. And the magic was produced – both fitted great together.
DQ: Are you an MC Lyte fan or was it just one of those songs that just worked?
PM: I remember that song from the '90s but I wasn't into it. But, now it's a different story.
DQ: I love your take on remixing old school hip-hop songs. Can we expect more this year?
PM: I am working on new material for Latinsizer.
DQ: Would you ever remix newer rappers like Wiz Khalifa or a Rick Ross track?
PM: Maybe.
DQ: How would you describe your "When In Love" remix to those who haven't heard it?
PM: MC Lyte is one of the first female rappers to release a full solo album and Latinsizer is an electronic music project based on analog synthesizers, '80s drum machines, a bit of square 4x4 music. So, the blending of this sound – a bit bizarre.
DQ: I wonder if MC Lyte has heard it? How's the response been?
PM: She didn't. I really did this for the love for music, not for making money of of it, just jamming
