Kaaboo's Battle of the Bands

Kaaboo and GigTown team up to bring more local artists to the big stage

When the Kaaboo Del Mar three-day music festival hits San Diego on Sept. 18-20, it’ll bring with it some names you may have heard before: No Doubt, the Killers, the Zac Brown Band, Snoop Dogg, Sheryl Crow, Counting Crows, the Roots, 311, Ben Harper, Switchfoot -- the list goes on and on.

But what you may not know is that San Diego will have more than a few artists getting in on the action too: The Burning of Rome, the Midnight Pine, the Drowning Men (read our recent interview with them here), the Nervous Wreckords, Slightly Stoopid, Tribal Seeds, the Silent Comedy and others have already been tapped to join the festival fun.

In an effort to throw yet another bone to homegrown, independent talent, the organizers behind Kaaboo and a San Diego-based mobile app called GigTown are giving up-and-coming artists a chance to join the ranks of their brethren and those aforementioned headliners on Sunday, Sept. 20.

Here’s the deal: There will be three Sunday night showcases that square off on-the-rise bands against each other, with a panel of fans and music-industry judges casting votes to send one winner from each show to perform on Kaaboo’s Emerging Artist Stage. Sound like a cool gig? That’s 'cause it is.

The Kaaboo Discovery Tour (as they call it) kicked off Sunday, July 19, at Brick by Brick with Brad Perry & the Acoustic Fingerprints, Hocus, Raelee Nikole and the Tolan Shaw Band taking the stage. After an intense night of music, the votes were counted and -- drum roll, please -- the Tolan Shaw Band emerged victorious. Congrats, dudes!

The tour continues on July 26 at Sainte Rocke in Hermosa Beach and features Aquile, Armors, Garrett Lee Robinson, Sandollar and Todo Mundo battling it out onstage. That show has a $5 cover, and tickets can be purchased online here or at the door.

The final stop returns to America’s Finest City with a showdown among Quartyard's shipping containers in East Village on Aug. 9, featuring Grizzly Business, Jet West, Ki and the Stranger Band. Tickets for the show are $10 and will be available at the door.

Head out to one of these shows, folks -- and you very well could be the deciding factor on who gets a shot to play Kaaboo Del Mar.

Kaaboo Del Mar runs Friday, Sept. 18 through Sunday, Sept. 20. Prices are as follows: Single-day passes are $125; any two-day combination passes are $229; and three-day passes are $299.
