Hip-Hop vs. Punk Rock in Tijuana

For the genre-bending music lover, "Hip-Hop vs. Punk Rock" is the show to attend. The party showdown originated two years ago in San Diego and is held first Fridays at the Tower Bar. But, on March 30, it will take place for the first time on the infamous Avenida Revolucion in Tijuana and feature S.D. and Tijuana artists.

DJ Unite drew inspiration from Tijuana's “motorcharged crust & roll punk band” Outlaw Bastards. He says, "They have travelled up from Tijuana to play at the Tower Bar with us so, it's fitting we do the same for them.” This will also mark the first time that Mexican/Filipino battle rap artist Scatterbrain will perform in Tijuana and share the stage with Outlaw Bastards. "We wanted to bring a hip-hop act we knew could kill it," confirms Unite.

The party isn't about which music genre is better. Instead, its goal is to bring two opposing underground music scenes from San Diego and Tijuana together. DJ Unite explains, "Most wouldn't think the two go together -- it's surprising how well the crowds mix and it's an introduction for punkers to know real hip-hop, and hip-hoppers to know some real punk rock."

In between the battles will be DJ sets from Tijuana's El DJ de TJ and Miss Lulu. Lineup for the night includes: Outlaw Bastards vs. Scatterbrain; First Power Crew vs. Calafia Puta; San Pedro Cortez vs. Batalla De Rap Abierta. It's guaranteed to be a flashback to the days in the '80s when Aerosmith met Run D.M.C. and the Beastie Boys became rappers .
