Expand Your Dance Radius

It’s another action-packed weekend in San Diego. You're going to have to pace yourself, especially because I highly recommend you start the party Thursday night.

If you're like me and you love to dance -- you're reading this, so, chances are you do -- there is so much to choose from, including an event happening at the Kava Lounge.  One of the nicest guys on the planet is celebrating his birthday, and there is some tasty talent lined up to provide the musical backdrop for the evening. Mateo’s Birthday Boom features Skrapez, Illuminauts, Griefshare, Argyle and Sludgebutt, plus a “Special Guest From Hell.”  And I do mean special. I am sworn to secrecy, so don’t even try to get it out of me. Go to this link for more info (minus the secret). Also on Thursday: San Diego’s very own Victor Ramos (aka Harvard Bass) hits Voyeur, along with London house DJ/producer Jesse Rose. This is an awesome double bill. Get more info here.

EDM lovers, unite! The Radius Festival is upon us. It will be two days of bass-thumping electronic music in San Diego on Friday and Saturday at the Aerospace Museum in Balboa Park. Swedish house producer Avicii will headline Friday night, along with Germany’s trance maestro Wippenberg. Also set to appear are Marcus Schossow (Sweden), Van Toth (based out of Miami and making his San Diego debut), trance duo Tritonal, Jon Dadon, and San Diego’s own Yan Lhert and Brett Nieman. Saturday features French mixologist Mr. Oizo, L.A.-based trio the Glitch Mob, Alan Braxe (France), Datsik, Canadian duo Zeds Dead, plus opening sets from David Kim and Trackonaut. If you are a fan of house, trance, electro or dubstep, this event is not to be missed. Get complete details via the official website. For something on the other side of the musical spectrum, Club Ascension at the Kava Lounge is happening Saturday night. Your hosts Tom King and I will be DJ-ing, along with special guest Precursor (Infrastructure). DJ Baron (Ruin, Disko Nekro, Scandal) joins us from Los Angeles to spin the best in dark underground music. It’s your chance to win passes for the advanced screening of Red Riding Hood on Monday night, before it comes out Friday, March 11. Ascension is also about supporting local artists, and this night will feature the debut art show from Britanny Weckerly.

These are a few of my favorite things this weekend. For more info about Thursday through Saturday DJ events, check out my blog. Hopefully you will have time to take a power nap at some point on Saturday. See you on the dance floor!

Robin Roth is a familiar voice in the San Diego scene.  She is on the air weekdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on 91X, plus she promotes and spins all over town, and when she comes up for a breath of air, she also manages the Tragic Tantrum.  For more info about upcoming gigs, check out her event blog.
