Drummer's Cause of Death ID'd

Thirty-three-year old Justin Jay was found dead in his apartment on Sunday.

The San Diego music community began the New Year on a sad note with news of the death of drummer Justin Jay. The 33-year old died from acute bacterial meningitis early Jan. 9 in his Golden Hill apartment, officials at the San Diego County Medical Examiner's office said on Thursday.

Jay was found when friends forced entry into his home, sdDialdIn reported earlier this week. He was last heard from on Jan. 5.

Jay drummed for the bands Boyscout, Hialeah and Japanese Sunday, and was a fixture on the local music scene. Rosemary Bystrak of sdDialedIn wrote that he could be seen any given night at the Casbah and other San Diego venues. She also created a 1000Memories web page to memorialize the drummer.

Jay's sister Courtney Jay Pesek said farewell on the page: "You will live in my heart, in my nephews' hearts and everyone you ever came in contact with."

Local social media buzzed this week with fans and friends remembering their friend Justin.

"All I can think about is how much bigger you were than this life to begin with, and I hope wherever you are now is a more deserving place," Carri Maeding wrote. "You brought joy to so many lives."
