Coachella is on the horizon, and whether you are going or not, we all benefit here in San Diego. Why, you ask? Well with two weekends of Coachella, plenty of artists play their own shows in the Western states. We have several of them in San Diego, and others are just a couple hours away. Let;s take a look at the month that is April and what I would do ...
April 2: Ume, White Murder and Schitzophonics at Soda Bar will be a rock & roll party!
April 3: Secret show at the Hideout, formerly the Void, aka Bar Eleven, aka Zombie Lounge
April 4: Willie Nelson at Humphrey's Concerts By the Bay. Go see the Red Headed Stranger do his thing.
April 5: The Black Lips and the Coathangers at the Belly Up. The kids go crazy for the Black Lips, and it's total chaos but fun! Or go to see the return of Ilya (record-release party), Champ and Arms Away at the Irenic -- check out SoundDiego's Spotlight video here
April 6: I would go see the War on Drugs at the Casbah, but it's sold out!
April 7: Proud Mary from the UK, with members of the Silent Comedy, plus the electro-soul sounds of Dr. Seahorse and Tiger & the Teller at the Casbah
April 8: Support local music at the Casbah, with Shane Hall & the Diabolicals, Sound Lupus and the Whiskey Circle
April 9: Support more local music at the Casbah, with Kodiak, Gone Baby Gone and the End (from Tijuana)
April 10: Head on over to Maryjane's Underground inside the Hard Rock Hotel for Sundrop Electric and St. Cloud Sleepers. It's a free show with a complimentary hour of drinks from 8-9 p.m., but you must RSVP
April 11: Movits!, a Swedish group mixing hip-hop and jazz., and Vokab Kompany at the Irenic
April 12: Megadeth's Dave Mustaine with the San Diego Symphony at Copley Symphony Hall. Metal meets classical!
April 13: Not much going on; looks like everybody's at Coachella...
April 14: U.K. band Proud Mary mini-residency with members of the Silent Comedy, Saint Shameless and Vaya Futuro at the Casbah. For fans of Oasis!
April 15: Peelander-Z (from Japan but based in NYC), with the Touchies and Pleasure Fix at the Soda Bar. Stanze and Mishey from the Touchies said Peelander-Z could quite possibly be the best live band ever! Or go see Mogwai at the Belly Up; they are also playing Coachella
April 16: UK psych rock band Temples and the Drowners at the Casbah
April 17: Jon Spencer Blues Explosion with Shockwave Riderz at the Casbah. Spencer will rock you, and he is also playing Coachella.
April 18: Bear Hands, Hills Like Elephants and Jesika Von Rabbit at the Casbah. Here's another chance to see a Coachella buzz band without going to the desert
April 19: Soul Clap & Dance of with DJ Jonathan Toubin at the Casbah. New York Night Train's Soul Clap & Dance Off featuring DJ Jonathan Toubin. There's a $100 cash prize for the winner, and local celebrity judges will be on hand.
April 20: Leopold & His Fiction plus the Soft White Sixties at the Casbah. Let's rock together on 420!
April 21: Miner and Spero at the Casbah -- for fans of the Lumineers!
April 22: Another Zeke Production Presents Western Setting, DFMK from TJ, the Rebound and Reconstruct the Dream at the Casbah. Bring earplugs!
April 23: The Men and Gun Outfit at the Casbah. Don't be confused: This is not the band with JD Samson of Le Tigre
April 24: Okapi Sun CD release party with We Are Sirens, 9 Theory and Swambi at the Casbah. Dance party!
April 25: Casbah presents Night Beats, Cosmonauts, Shiva Trash and Wild Wild Wet DJ's at the Soda Bar. It's a psych rock party!
April 26: Ghost B.C. and King Dude at the House of Blues -- it's metal! Or get nutty with the Dillinger Escape Plan, Trash Talk and Retox at Porter's Pub
April 27: The U.K. rock & rollers the Jim Jones Review, the Freeks and Javier Escovedo of the Zeros at Soda Bar. Or Reignwolf at the Casbah, who just might blow your mind!
April 28: DIIV at the Casbah, with Chris Cohen and Kiki Pau. It's slightly dreamy, indie and shoe-gazey.
April 29: Sleeper Agent, HolyChild and Pagiins at the Irenic. Sleeper Agent are from Bowling Green, Ky., and you may have seen them open for Cage the Elephant.
April 30: Psych-soul rockers from San Francisco Monophonics at the Casbah.
Wow, what a month! I'll be at most of these shows but will be at Coachella for Weekend II. If you're going to be out in the desert, hit me up, and I'll see you at a show!
