Shutting Pre-Schools?

California needs to prepare more children for kindergarten.

California needs more parents to work.

State budget cuts are undermining both goals.

The Bay Citizen, the new journalistic enterprise, has the story of how state budget cuts are beginning to force the closure of some pre-schools that provide extended child care -- the kind of 12-hour coverage that permit working parents to, well, work.

But these kinds of extended-day preschools have been targeted for cuts (The half-day programs have been protected). So kids get less preparation and parents find it harder to work. How does this make sense?
