Brown Asks GOP: What Exactly Is Your Problem With Letting the People Decide?

Gov. Jerry Brown's State of the State speech was something of  a departure from previous State of the State addresses -- which typically lay out long lists of detailed policy proposals.

This speech was short (14 minutes 23 seconds), to the point, and very pointed. It was directed both at Republican legislators and at various interest groups who have criticized Brown's budget.

Brown was withering in how he depicted Republicans, as afraid of giving voters the right to decide on taxes. If the GOP is so convinced that Californians, why not let voters decide? Brown even went so far as to read Article 2, Sec. 1 of the California constitution, whcih reads: "All political power is inherent in the people. Government is instituted for their protection, security and benefit, and they have the right to alter or reform it when the public good may require."

Brown also said that while he has asked groups that oppose spending cuts and other pieces of his budget for his alternative, not a single group has offered even one alternative.

This short speech was a slap in the face that said, "Stop whining and either get with the program, Or come up with a better solution than what I'm offering."

We'll have some alternatives to Brown's proposal here at Prop Zero.
