iPhone's Newest Carrier to End Unlimited Data

I don't mean to be a Mr. Negative today, but here's some more downer news: Sprint, which painted itself as the unlimited data network with the iPhone 4S, is making it official that both new and old customers are getting capped under a new plan. Before you get that pitchfork off the wall, though, there's a bright spot here.

The good news: the coming cap, which drops next month, won't effect smartphone users who aren't dabbling in the wild world of tethering. Tablets, netbooks and laptops, connection cards and mobile hotspots will all be yoked with data caps.

If you enjoyed your unlimited 4G data under Sprint before, it'll now be limited similarly to the carrier's 3G offering, and 3G and 4G will both drain the same pool.

From Ars Technica:

That cap is now official: both new and old customers are getting their plans capped. Tablet, netbook, notebook, USB card, connection card users who used to have a limited amount of 3G data and unlimited 4G data have a combined limit for both kinds, in tiers of 3GB, 5GB, and 10GB. For every additional megabyte customers use after that, they will be charged 5¢. Customers who use their phones as mobile hotspots will have that service capped at 5GB, with the same overage charge.

The change will happen in November for affected customers, depending on when their next billing cycle hits.
