e-Books May Have Killed the Bookshelf

Thanks Apple, Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Not only have you have successfully killed the beloved paper book but now it appears you have taken out the bookshelf that once carried those books.

If IKEA's design habits are any indication of whether the industry is going, the long-whispered death of books may have finally come.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the Swedish furniture-maker is preparing its popular BILLY bookcase with shelves that can carry everything but books.

The new bookcase -- if we can still call it that -- will debut next month with deeper shelves meant to display ornaments and coffee-table items instead of books.

IKEA is reportedly already pushing glass cases for its bookshelves in anticipation of customers wanting to house more than just decorative books on those shelves.
