After some controversy, Facebook finally released its "Nearby Friends" feature so users know when Facebook friends are physically near them.
"If you turn on Nearby Friends, you’ll occasionally be notified when friends are nearby, so you can get in touch with them and meet up," Facebook announced on its company blog. So if users are heading to dinner and see friends nearby, they may want to meet up later. Of course, this will make it harder to make excuses to not meet up later.
Facebook took great pains to say that the "Nearby Friends" feature is optional, and one can only see his or her friends on the app only if all users are signed up. Basically, everyone has to sign up and agree to use the feature for it to work. After Facebook's previous privacy fiascoes, it's nice to see that it's a default setting.
