Google to Unveil New Maps Ahead of Apple Maps

Apple is largely expected to announce it is ditching Google Maps for its own 3D mapping service at its World Wide Developer's Conference on June 11.

Google is now preparing to preempt Apple's announcement with its own "behind-the-scenes look at Google Maps" and a vision-sharing session five days before Apple's conference.

The Mountain View-based search company sent out invitations to members of the press saying it will demonstrate new features that "will get people where they want to go -- both physically and virtually."

Brian McClendon, VP of Google Maps and Google Earth, will be on hand to show off the new features.

Apple has been using Google Maps for its iOS-powered devices since it first introduced the iPhone and the iPad.
