Google Plans First Retail Space Near NYC Apple Store

Google isn't afraid to take on Apple or its foot traffic. It now plans an 8,000-square-foot retail store, its first, near a New York City Apple store.

The area, in New York City's SoHo neighborhood, is also close to a Warby Parker eyewear store, a company also rumored to be designing Google Glass frames, according to VentureBeat.

Crain's New York first reported the development and that the new store is creating a "rising star" of Greene Street, a former SoHo "backwater." Despite the development, there has been no word on when the store would open or what Google might be selling. However, Mashable decided it was likely Google Glass or Google's Chromebook laptops.

Google has created physical stores before, notably Androidland in Australia, Indonesia and India. Google also has a giant barge shrouded in quasi-secrecy, which at one time was supposed to be a floating Google Glass megastore before Google was told by authorities to move the boat or incur hefty fines. (It has since been moved to Stockton and still could be a floating megastore.)

Is this all related? We think so. But will all this hullabaloo be about Google Glass or something even more shrouded in mystery. We hope for the latter.
