Google Maps:10M Downloads in 48 Hours

Google announced that its Google Maps for iPhone received more than 10 million downloads in less than 48 hours of its release.

"We're excited for the positive reception of Google Maps for iPhone around the world. Congratulations to the Maps Team on the recognition for the passion and hard work they poured into it," wrote Jeff Huber, Google's senior vice president of commerce and local on his Google+ page.

Huber then proceeded to a soft sell on the app, "If you already have it -- thank you, and please tell a friend."

Of course the insane popularity of the Google Maps iPhone app is primarily based on the sheer inadequacy of Apple's in-house maps app. You know, the one accused of stranding Australian tourists and pointing users to a museum in the middle of the Thames? If that's your alternative, then Google Maps looks pretty darn good.
