French President Nicolas Sarkozy welcomed some of tech's heaviest hitters to his country with a word of caution.

Sarkozy opened a conference, featuring leaders of the tech world in Paris, by encouraging the likes of Mark Zuckerberg and Eric Schmidt to work with foreign governments and share the benefits of revolution.

He compared the tech world's role on recent uprisings in the Middle East to the discoveries of Columbus, Galileo and Newton.

The French leader's words were interesting considering his tattered reputation in some segments of the tech community for his stance against software piracy.

Sarkozy told the techies that governments must have a role in limiting potential abuses that can come from the Internet.
