Former Facebook Worker Sues for Sexual Discrimination

A former Facebook employee is suing the social network for sex discrimination, sexual harassment and racial discrimination, according to reports.

Chia Hong worked at Facebook for three years until October 2013. In her complaint filed at the San Mateo County Superior Court earlier this week, she said she was treated differently because of her sex, race and national origin, according to Re/code. She was ultimately fired in 2013.

Hong's suit claims that she was constantly insulted at work and asked "why she did not just stay home and take care of her children.” She claimed that she was "punished" for taking time from her job to volunteer at her child's school and felt she had to organize parties and serve drinks to male coworkers -- which she stated "wasn't in her job description."

Facebook denied the allegations. “We work extremely hard on issues related to diversity, gender and equality, and we believe we’ve made progress,”a spokesperson said in a statement provided to Re/code. “In this case we have substantive disagreements on the facts, and we believe the record shows the employee was treated fairly.”

Hong is being represented by the same San Francisco firm representing former Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers venture partner Ellen Pao in her high-profile sex discrimination case. Some say that Pao's case has caused other women to come forward, such as Hong, and that may continue as the case progresses.
