Facebook: Top Mobile App, not Google Maps

Facebook is ranked as the top mobile app of 2012, just beating out Google Maps to take the top spot, according to a leading digital data analytics firm.

Facebook, with more than 85 million unique visitors, beat out Google Maps which had almost 76 million visitors, according to comScore, a Reston, Va.-based company. However, despite not having the top spot, Google seems as if it's doing all right.  We know that No. 3 on the list was Google Play, No. 4 was Google Search, Gmail was No. 5 and No. 6 was YouTube -- that's nearly 300 million unique visitors flocking to Google apps.

But how did Google Maps not get top billing on the list? Well, comScore says the reason is based on timing. When the new iOS 6 came without Google Maps and only Apple Maps in October, Google's app usage went down. As Google Maps came to the iOS in December, its numbers have steadily climbed, according to Andrew Lipsman of comScore.

We reported on the Google Maps app coming to iOS in December, when Google claimed 10 million downloads in the first 48 hours of its release, showing that iOS users wanted the mapping app and weren't happy with Apple's less-than-accurate map offering. This means that Google Maps' numbers for 2013 may be much higher.
