YouTube Is Good for the Environment: Google

When you search green, Google wants its name to come up.

The Mountain View-based tech giant released how much electricity it uses to combat concerns about its carbon footprint.

Google says it used 2.3 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity last year and that its large data centers, that power websites such as YouTube, are actually better for the environment than the alternative.

The company's electricity usage is the equivalent of 207,000 American homes annual usage. And while that may sound staggering, Google argue it's not considering what its network of sites help the average American cut down on.

Google says sites such as YouTube actually cut down the country's carbon footprint because the alternative -- DVDs and Blu Ray production -- are most more harmful.

The data also reveals that Google's energy usage is in line with a big chemical company but far less than oil giants.

It would be interesting to see if Apple can say the same thing.
