McGregor Not Pleased “Phillip Morris” Has Been Delayed and Down-Gayed

Ewan McGregor has a theory as to why the release of his dramatic romcom "I Love You Phillip Morris," co-starring Jim Carrey, has taken so long, and he's not terribly pleased.

“There was talk that Disney fended off the release until after "A Christmas Carol" came out. They didn’t want kids thinking [Carrey’s] Ebenezer Scrooge was a bender,” McGregor told Out.

Adding to McGregor's frustration were the attempts to downplay the gayness of the film.

“There was quite a lot of talk at Sundance (in 2009) that ‘Well, it’s not a gay movie. It’s a film about guys who happen to be gay.’ And I was thinking, it’s nothing but a gay movie," declared McGregor.

After wowing audiences at last year's Sundance, "Phillip Morris," didn't get a distribution deal until May. At the time it was slated for a Valentine's Day release -- making McGregor's Disney meddling claim dubious. This past November the release was pushed back to March 26.

Carrey can be an exhausting mugger, and McGregor has made a number of dubious choices over the past decade, but the always funny Leslie Mann plays Carrey's ex-wife and the script is from Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, the writing-and-directing team behind "Bad Santa" and the story is, on its face, great.
