Lionsgate Digs “Buried”

"Buried," starring Ryan Reynolds as a kidnapping victim trapped in a small box underground, was the object of the first bidding war at this year's Sundance film festival, with Lionsgate coming out on top.

Reynolds plays a U.S. contractor working in Iraq who is taken hostage and awakens in a coffin with a cell phone and a lighter, in the film directed by Rodrigo Cortes.

Despite working steadily for the better part of a decade and appearing in blockbusters like last year's "The Proposal," Reynolds has yet to really find an audience. His supporting turn in "Adventureland" last year was really the only work for which he's been praised for anything other than being handsome and glibly charming.

But the revelation of the "Buried" trailer last week caught people's attention, with the buzz culminating in the folks at Lionsgate pulling out their checkbook.
