Kathryn Bigelow To Direct HBO Pilot

One of the odd subplots to Kathryn Bigelow’s big year in 2009 with “The Hurt Locker” is that, despite her massive talent, Bigelow does not direct movies very often.

Bigelow made a grand total of two films during the entire decade of the 1990s. Before “The Hurt Locker,” her last big movie was “K19: The Widowmaker” with Harrison Ford all the way back in 2002. Why hasn’t, Bigelow made movies more often? Is it because she couldn’t get jobs? If so, isn’t that an enormous disgrace to Hollywood, given that she has been a wildly talented director ever since she made her first feature?

One of the great things about “The Hurt Locker's" critical success is that it promises to allow Bigelow to work more. Already, we’re seeing signs of it. Bigelow just agreed to direct a family drama pilot for HBO. From Variety:

Oscar-nommed helmer Kathryn Bigelow has signed on to direct the HBO pilot "The Miraculous Year."

John Logan is the writer, exec producer and creator of "Year," which centers on a charismatic, self-destructive Broadway composer and his family in New York.

Project reps the first major project from Bigelow since her Academy Award-nominated work as director of "The Hurt Locker."

Bigelow is exec producing the pilot but not attached beyond that.

Bigelow has directed a handful TV episodes in her career, including “Homicide” and “Karen Cisco.” Logan is the guy who wrote “Gladiator.” So yeah, this could end up being pretty awesome. After all, no one does giant family dramas like HBO does. Here’s hoping this is only the tip of the iceberg, and portends lots more Bigelow in our future.
